Study Intakes for International Students — How to Plan Around Them
August 7, 2023 · Dixon Travels
Most universities abroad run two main intakes a year:
- Autumn (September/October) — the biggest intake, with the widest choice of programmes and scholarships. Application windows usually open 8–12 months ahead.
- Spring (January/February) — a smaller intake, useful if you missed autumn or need extra time to prepare documents or language scores.
Some institutions also run a small summer intake for certain programmes.
Why the intake matters
The intake date sets your entire timeline. If you want the September intake, you need to be applying the previous autumn or winter — which means your transcripts, language test, and funds documentation need to be ready months before that. Miss the window and you wait a full year, or settle for a less-suitable spring option.
Working backwards
A rough timeline for a September intake:
- 12 months before: decide destination and shortlist programmes
- 10 months before: sit your language test (IELTS/TOEFL/etc.) if required
- 9 months before: submit applications
- 6 months before: accept your offer, arrange funds documentation
- 4 months before: file your student visa application
- September: travel and enrol
