Student Visa vs. Study Permit — What's the Difference?
March 30, 2024 · Dixon Travels
A lot of applicants use “student visa” and “study permit” interchangeably. In most systems, they’re two different things — and you usually need both.
The student visa
The visa is the document (usually a sticker in your passport, or an electronic authorisation) that lets you enter the country for the purpose of study. You apply for it from your home country, at an embassy or consulate or online, before you travel. It typically has a limited validity — just long enough to get you in.
The study permit / residence permit
Once you arrive, you usually have to register with the local immigration authority and obtain a residence permit for study purposes — sometimes called a study permit. This is what actually lets you stay for the duration of your programme. It’s renewed each year (or each programme stage) and is what’s checked when you re-enter the country, open a bank account, or work.
Why the difference matters
- The visa gets you in; the permit lets you stay.
- You apply for the visa before travel; you apply for the permit after arrival, within a deadline.
- Missing the permit-registration deadline after you land is a serious problem — even if your visa was approved.
